The Festival of Banners was introduced by the Nanaimo Art Gallery in 1987. Dubbed a "Gallery in the Streets" local artists create banners that reflect the years theme and these banners are displayed in the streets from the early spring until early September, at which time they are auctioned off. Artists of all ages get into the fun and awards are given out.

This annual Victoria Day weekend event features the crowning of a May Queen, Maypole dancing by local children, a midway in the Civic Arena and an Empire Days Parade through the downtown area. The grand finale is a fireworks display over the Nanaimo waterfront.
