Nanaimo's first Dragon Boat Festival was held in 2002, drawing big crowds from all over. The festival runs for three days in July and takes place in the beautiful Nanaimo Harbour at Maffeo Sutton Park and Pioneer Plaza.

The Nanaimo Marine Festival is an annual event which runs for four days in the summer. The festival is jammed-packed with events and involves several venues throughout the city. Events include a pancake breakfast, live performances, festival food fare, numerous children's events and concludes with the Great Bathtub Race, a tradition started in 1967.
