Waterfront District
Nanaimo's harbour and commercial boat basin is a favourite destination for boaters. The four kilometer Harbourside Walkway, Swy-a-lana Lagoon, Fishing and Walking Pier and Maffeo Sutton Park are combined as the most popular destination for recreation in the city.

Old City Quarter Nanaimo
An original part of Nanaimo's economic core, the Old City Quarter is now home to a large percentage of retail shops and dining establishments preserved behind the original bulidings of the area, dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Besides a variety of gift shops, cafes and restaurants, this district plays host to numerous events year-round.

Protection Island
This small residential neighbourhood is accessible only by boat or passenger ferry. Protection Island has several beaches and at low tide, it is possible to walk across to nearby Newcastle Island.
