Nanaimo Districts & Neighbourhoods
The historic core of the city is burgeoning with traditional, community, and 'edgy' shows, events and performances. Its winding streets and alleyways, lined with turn of the century architecture mixed with new developments, are home to theatres, arts companies, shops, galleries, sidewalk cafes and restaurants.
Nanaimo's harbour and commercial boat basin is a favourite destination for boaters. The four kilometer Harbourside Walkway, Swy-a-lana Lagoon, Fishing and Walking Pier and Maffeo Sutton Park are combined as the most popular destination for recreation in the city.
An original part of Nanaimo's economic core, the Old City Quarter is now home to a large percentage of retail shops and dining establishments preserved behind the original bulidings of the area, dating from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Besides a variety of gift shops, cafes and restaurants, this district plays host to numerous events year-round.
